Msossi connects customers to stores on WhatsApp for easy, real-time food orders

Msossi Co-Founder and CEO Kevin Otiende, during the outreach activation, engaging stakeholders on the app’s mission to save food by connecting consumers to affordable meals

Msossi, Kenya’s first innovative food app designed to combat food waste and losses, has integrated WhatsApp into its platform to streamline communication with partner stores and improve order fulfillment.

The new WhatsApp integration links Msossi’s system directly to a partner store’s WhatsApp numbers, enabling real-time delivery of critical order updates through a platform businesses trust. This ensures faster communication, improved visibility, and more efficient order management without requiring teams to switch tools. The enhancement is designed to improve operational efficiency, reduce missed orders, and ensure that more surplus food successfully reaches customers.

“With this WhatsApp integration, we are meeting our users where they already are,” said Kevin Otiende, Msossi’s CEO. “The integration is simplifying communication, we are ensuring more food is saved, more customers can access affordable meals, and local businesses are better supported in building a more sustainable food system.”

Partner stores stand to benefit significantly from the integration, particularly as it requires no additional app downloads or logins, and with notifications delivered directly to WhatsApp, stores no longer need to constantly check emails, making communication fit seamlessly into existing daily workflows.

A key feature of the integration is instant order notifications, which enable partner stores to receive a WhatsApp message immediately after a new order is placed. This real-time visibility ensures stores can act promptly, prepare orders on time, and avoid unnecessary delays.

In addition, Msossi has introduced automated packing reminders, which notify stores via WhatsApp shortly before the scheduled pickup time. These reminders help businesses prepare and pack goodie bags in advance, reducing last-minute rushes and minimising errors.

The real-time alerts also enable faster responses and smoother operations, helping stores stay organised, improve preparation timelines, and operate more efficiently. Most importantly, this results in an improved customer experience, with timely preparation leading to smoother pickups, fewer delays, and more reliable access to discounted meals.

The WhatsApp integration directly supports Msossi’s broader mission to make food more affordable while reducing food waste and environmental impact. By connecting with partner businesses on a platform they already use, Msossi makes things simpler, cuts down confusion, and helps stores take part in food rescue efforts without having to change their daily workflow.

According to the Communication Authority of Kenya’s Audience Measurement and Industry Trends Report 2025, WhatsApp is the most preferred social media platform, with 53.9% after Facebook, which is used by 68.6% of Kenyans. Most Kenyans use WhatsApp as the key for communication and business-customer interaction.
