Mogo pledges continued support for boda boda operators in Nyanza as the company reopens renovated Kisumu County Association offices damaged by fire

Mogo, East Africa’s leading asset financier, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting boda boda operators in Western Kenya as part of its ongoing efforts to uplift the welfare and income of riders across the region.

On Monday, Mogo, together with its partners, officially reopened the renovated Kisumu County Boda Boda Association offices, which were recently destroyed by fire. The incident disrupted the daily operations of hundreds of riders who depend on the facility for coordination, dispute resolution, welfare services, communication, and administrative support.

“Mogo has always been at the heart of supporting boda boda operators;  not only by helping them acquire new motorcycles at affordable prices and access flexible loans, but also by actively contributing to their social and economic wellbeing,” said Margaret Waithaka, Regional Manager, Nyanza at Mogo Kenya.

“We continue to empower riders through financial literacy training, responsible borrowing education, and community initiatives, including programmes aimed at reducing social challenges such as teen pregnancies in various parts of the country.”

Following the fire, the Association reached out to Mogo for assistance. In response, Mogo fully funded the renovation and rebuilding of the office structure and furnished it to ensure seamless resumption of services.

During the reopening, Mogo also participated in a tree-planting exercise, organised a free motorcycle service clinic, and hosted fun engagement activities for members. One of the partners, Bajaj, also donated a brand-new motorcycle to the County boda boda Chairman.

According to a recent Viffa Consult report, the boda boda sector generates approximately KES 660 billion annually, equivalent to 4.4% of Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The industry directly employs over 2.5 million people and provides essential income to families and communities across the country. Western Kenya accounts for a significant share of these riders, underscoring the sector’s crucial role in both regional and national economic growth.

The boda boda industry remains a vital economic driver, and Mogo’s continued investment highlights its dedication to supporting sustainable livelihoods and strengthening the sector’s positive impact on Kenyan communities.
