Msossi Ventures Joins Dialogue on Reducing Food Waste in Kenya

Msossi Ventures participated in the recent multi-stakeholder dialogue hosted by the World Resources Institute on 5 May 2025 under the theme, “Advancing a National Platform on Food Loss and Waste for Kenya.” The forum convened key stakeholders across the sustainability and food sectors, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU), academia, media, civil society, and development organizations.

The discussions focused on addressing food loss and waste in Kenya through innovation, policy, technology, and cross-sector collaboration. As a food-tech company committed to helping consumers save money while saving food, Msossi Ventures recognizes the urgent need for innovative and collaborative solutions that reduce food waste while improving accessibility, sustainability, and economic resilience. Since its founding, Msossi has been helping stores in the food value chain, including restaurants, supermarkets, and hotels, offset surplus food to customers at significant discounts, thereby reducing food waste in the country.

Speaking at the event, Msossi CEO Kevin Otiende said, “We are the new kids on this block, but we play an important role that was previously not fully exploited, and that is the role of technology in bridging the gap, especially on the retail side. Engaging all stakeholders is critical because sharing insights and data is key to achieving targeted and effective solutions across the broader ecosystem.”

The dialogue aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which aims to halve global food waste at the retail and consumer levels while reducing food losses across production and supply chains by 2030, while reinforcing the commitments outlined in the Malabo Declaration 2014, which calls on African Union member states to reduce post-harvest losses by 50 percent by 2025.

Key areas of discussion included post-harvest losses, food redistribution systems, data and measurement frameworks, climate resilience, circular economy approaches, policy implementation, and the role of technology in building more efficient and sustainable food value chains.

According to the World Resources Institute’s 2025 report, food loss and waste in Kenya continue to exacerbate food insecurity, currently affecting more than 15 million people and resulting in economic losses estimated at KES 72 billion (USD 578 million) annually. At the same time, between 30 and 40 percent of food is lost or wasted between production and consumption.

Further highlighting the scale of the challenge, the United Nations Environment Programme Food Waste Index Report 2021 found that every Kenyan discards an average of 99 kilograms of food annually, contributing to an estimated 5.2 million tonnes of food waste nationwide.

The dialogue reinforced the importance of coordinated action in building food systems that are more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient to both environmental and economic challenges. Msossi Ventures remains committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to a smarter, more sustainable future for food in Kenya.
